CHS Automation Rockwell/Allen-Bradley Servo Control Package:

System Overview:

The Allen-Bradley Press Feed Package is a single axis system which is comprised of the following components:

  • Allen Bradley Servo Drive
  • Press Feed Application Software
  • Allen Bradley Servo Motor
  • PanelView Operator Interface
  • Panel View Plus application
  • Motor Power Cable
  • Motor Encoder Cable

The sizes of the motor and amplifier will vary depending on the actual job requirements

The controls have the following functions as standard:

  •  Feed To Length
  •  Feed Length Micro Adjust
  •  Jog Mode
  •  Jog Feed Mode
  •  Feed Roll Open/Close
  •  Pilot Pin Control

The basic function is to index a pre-determined length once a feed initiate signal is received.  Upon completion of the feed, the feed complete signal is set.  This feed drive package has the ability to be controlled via the operator interface, hardwired inputs, or a combination of both.

Description of Software Functions:

  1. Feed to Length – Wait for the Enable and Auto Mode inputs to be true.  If these inputs are true and a Feed Initiate signal is received the controller will index the length that is programmed in the “Length” variable.
  2. Micro Adjust – Adds or subtracts a pre-programmed amount to the current feed length.
  3. Jog Mode – The drive must be Enabled and in Manual mode.  The Jog mode must be set to “Jog”.  Once the Jog Fwd or Jog Rev input is received the motor will run in the respective direction until the input is removed.  The speed for the jog is set by the Jog Speed parameter.
  4. Jog Feed Mode – The drive must be Enabled and in Manual mode.  The Jog mode must be set to “Jog Feed”.  Once the Jog Fwd or Jog Rev input is received the motor will run in the respective direction until either the 0 user units or the Feed Length position is received.  The motor will only allow movement for one feed progression.  A Feed Initiate signal must be received to allow another feed progression.  Putting the feeder into “Manual Mode” and then “Auto Mode” will allow another feed progression.
  5. Feed Roll Open/Close – In Manual mode the Feed Roll Open/Closed input controls the state of the feed rolls.  The feed rolls will close automatically when the drive is put into Auto mode.
  6. Pilot Pin – Enables the Pilot Pin mode when the input is received.

Description of Modes:

Manual Mode – In the Manual Mode of operation the following functions can be performed:

  • Jog Forward and Reverse
  • Jog Feed Forward and Reverse
  • Feed Roll Open and Close
  • Load a New Job Recipe (100 Job Storage Capacity)
  • Enter the Feeder Setup Screen
  • After proper entry of password

Auto Mode – In Auto Mode of operation the following functions can be performed:

  • Feed to length upon receiving the Feed Initiate input
  • Micro adjust of feed length
  • Enter the Feeder Setup Screen
    • After proper entry of password
    • Some functions may not be changeable while the feeder is auto mode

Description of Inputs and Outputs:

The following is a description of the input and output functions.

The inputs listed below unless stated otherwise can be controlled by either the hardwired inputs on the input card or they can be controlled by the PanelView Plus terminal.  In most cases the inputs can only be controlled be either the hardwired inputs or the PanelView Plus terminal, not both of them.

Hardwired only inputs:  These inputs can only be controlled via inputs wired to the input card.

  • Estop
  • Feed Initiate

Hardwired or PanelView Plus inputs:  The following inputs can be controlled by the hardwired inputs or the PanelView Plus terminal, but not both. The selection of the input source is made on the I/O setup screen on the PanelView Plus terminal.

  • Auto Mode
  • Jog / Jog Feed mode select
  • Feed Roll Open / Close
  • Pilot Pin On / Off
  • Anti-Backup Close / Open
  • Motor On
  • Motor Off
  • Manual Mode
